What Are Neurofibrillary Tangles and Amyloid Plaques?
Neurofibrillary tangles are twisted fibers of the protein tau that accumulate inside neurons, while amyloid plaques are clumps of beta-amyloid protein that build up outside neurons. Both are hallmark features of Alzheimer's Disease and contribute to the death of brain cells. Environmental toxins can exacerbate the formation of these pathological structures.
