Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic, colorless, and odorless gas. It is a byproduct of incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels. CO binds to hemoglobin in the blood, forming carboxyhemoglobin, which reduces the blood's ability to carry oxygen. This can lead to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and, in severe cases, death. Low-level exposure over long periods can cause chronic health issues, including cardiovascular and neurological damage.
