Overdose on buprenorphine is managed differently than with full opioid agonists. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, is often used to reverse the effects of overdose. However, due to buprenorphine's high receptor affinity, larger or repeated doses of naloxone may be required. Supportive care, including monitoring and maintaining airway patency, is critical.
