Substitution: One base pair is replaced by another. This can result in silent mutations (no change in protein), missense mutations (change in one amino acid), or nonsense mutations (introduction of a stop codon). Insertion: An extra base pair is added to the DNA sequence, potentially causing a frameshift mutation. Deletion: A base pair is removed, also possibly leading to a frameshift mutation.
