Apixaban is an oral anticoagulant that selectively inhibits Factor Xa, an essential component in the coagulation cascade. By doing so, apixaban prevents the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, thereby reducing the formation of blood clots. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE).
