familial hypercholesterolemia
What is Familial Hypercholesterolemia?
Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a
genetic disorder
characterized by high levels of
low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol
in the blood. This condition increases the risk of
cardiovascular disease
at an early age. It is caused by mutations in genes responsible for
cholesterol metabolism
, primarily the
LDL receptor gene
.
