Torrefaction is a thermal process used to improve the properties of biomass by heating it in the absence of oxygen at temperatures between 200°C and 300°C. This process removes moisture and volatile compounds, resulting in a dry, energy-dense material often referred to as "biocoal." The resulting product is more hydrophobic, has a higher calorific value, and is easier to grind, making it an attractive option for renewable energy applications.
