Dinoflagellates produce a variety of marine toxins, including saxitoxins, brevetoxins, and okadaic acid, among others. Saxitoxins are responsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), while brevetoxins cause neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP). Okadaic acid is linked to diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). These toxins interfere with nerve function and can be potentially fatal if consumed in large amounts.
