Addiction develops through a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Initially, an individual may seek out a substance for its pleasurable effects. Over time, the brain's reward system becomes overwhelmed by the excessive release of neurotransmitters like dopamine. This leads to a decrease in the brain's ability to experience pleasure from everyday activities and a need for higher doses of the substance to achieve the same effect, known as tolerance.
