Adenine is metabolized through the purine metabolism pathway. It is converted into inosine monophosphate (IMP) via the action of adenine phosphoribosyltransferase. Further steps in purine metabolism can lead to the formation of uric acid, which is then excreted through urine. Disruptions in this pathway can lead to metabolic disorders such as gout.
