Several drugs are known to cause hepatotoxicity. Acetaminophen is a well-known over-the-counter medication that can cause significant liver damage when taken in high doses. Other drugs, such as certain antibiotics (e.g., isoniazid, rifampin), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and antiepileptic drugs (e.g., valproic acid, phenytoin), have also been implicated. Herbal supplements and dietary products, often perceived as safe, can also cause liver injury.
