A number of substances are known to act as sensitizers. These include certain metals like nickel, chemicals found in cosmetics and personal care products, industrial chemicals, and naturally occurring substances such as poison ivy. Nickel is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. Other chemical sensitizers include formaldehyde, epoxy resins, and some fragrances.
