Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as "mad cow disease," is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects cattle. It is a type of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), which results from the accumulation of abnormal proteins known as prions in the brain. These prions cause the brain to become porous, like a sponge, leading to severe neurological symptoms.
