Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) is a complex formed when carbon monoxide (CO) binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. This binding is significantly stronger than the binding of oxygen to hemoglobin, which can lead to severe tissue hypoxia as oxygen delivery to the tissues is impaired.
