In cancer cells, efflux pumps are often overexpressed, leading to the expulsion of chemotherapeutic agents and resulting in chemotherapy resistance. This makes efflux pumps a target for developing new cancer treatments. Inhibitors of efflux pumps are being researched to enhance the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs by preventing their expulsion from cancer cells.
