The most prominent enzymes in Phase I metabolism are the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. These enzymes are responsible for the oxidative metabolism of a wide range of xenobiotics, including drugs and environmental pollutants. Other enzymes that contribute to Phase I metabolism include flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs), alcohol and aldehyde dehydrogenases, and various hydrolases.
