How Does Phase I Metabolism Affect Toxicity?

Phase I metabolism can either detoxify or activate toxicants. In some cases, the metabolic conversion of a xenobiotic produces reactive metabolites that are more toxic than the parent compound. This process is known as bioactivation. Conversely, Phase I metabolism can also lead to detoxification, where the modified compound is less toxic and more readily excreted from the body.
