Upon first exposure to an allergen, the immune system may produce IgE antibodies specific to that allergen. These antibodies bind to mast cells and basophils, which are types of immune cells. Subsequent exposure to the same allergen results in the cross-linking of IgE on these cells, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine. This release causes symptoms like itching, swelling, and respiratory distress.
