Individuals with ALDH2 deficiency, often due to a genetic mutation known as ALDH2*2, exhibit reduced enzyme activity. This condition is prevalent in East Asian populations and leads to the accumulation of acetaldehyde after alcohol consumption, resulting in symptoms such as facial flushing, nausea, and increased heart rate. Chronic exposure to elevated acetaldehyde levels can increase the risk of certain cancers, particularly esophageal cancer.
