How Does Physostigmine Compare to Other Treatments?
While physostigmine is effective in reversing anticholinergic toxicity, it is not the first-line treatment for all cholinergic crises. For example, in cases of organophosphate poisoning, atropine and pralidoxime are preferred. Atropine counteracts the effects of excess acetylcholine by blocking its receptors, while pralidoxime reactivates acetylcholinesterase that has been inhibited by organophosphates.
