How Does Potentiation Differ from Other Interactions?

Potentiation is distinct from other types of chemical interactions such as synergism, antagonism, and additivity. In synergism, the combined effect of chemicals is also greater than their individual effects, but both chemicals actively contribute to the toxicity. In potentiation, one substance, often non-toxic on its own, enhances the effect of another toxic substance. Antagonism occurs when one substance reduces the effect of another, while additivity implies that the combined effect is equal to the sum of individual effects.
