How Does the Body Respond to Toxicological Stress?
In response to toxicological stress, the body activates a range of defense mechanisms to restore homeostasis. This includes the upregulation of stress proteins, such as heat shock proteins, and the activation of antioxidant pathways to neutralize reactive oxygen species. Additionally, the immune system may be mobilized to counteract toxic insults. If these responses are overwhelmed, however, it can lead to cellular damage and disease.
