How does the respiratory tract protect against toxins?
The respiratory tract filters and conditions the air before it reaches the lungs. The mucociliary escalator is a critical component, where mucus traps particles and microorganisms, and cilia transport them out of the respiratory system. Despite this, small particles and gases can penetrate deeper into the lungs, where they may be absorbed into the bloodstream. Chronic exposure to air pollutants can impair this barrier function, leading to respiratory diseases and systemic toxicity.
