Castration: Young male rats are castrated to remove endogenous sources of androgens. Acclimation: The animals are allowed a recovery period post-castration. Treatment: The rats are divided into groups and administered the test substance, a reference androgen, or a vehicle control. Measurement: After a specified period, the rats are sacrificed, and the weights of androgen-dependent tissues such as the ventral prostate, seminal vesicles, and levator ani muscle are measured.
The differences in tissue weights between treated and control groups provide insights into the androgenic or anti-androgenic properties of the test compound.
