Whole bowel irrigation involves the oral or nasogastric administration of a polyethylene glycol solution to flush the gastrointestinal tract. It is useful in cases of sustained-release drug overdoses or ingestion of substances not well adsorbed by activated charcoal. Whole bowel irrigation is often used in conjunction with other treatments to enhance toxin elimination.
