Fluorescent proteins are molecules that absorb light at a specific wavelength and emit it at another, longer wavelength. The most famous example is the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), originally discovered in the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. These proteins have been genetically engineered to produce a spectrum of colors, allowing for multiplexing in experimental designs.
