What Are the Mechanisms Behind Lipofuscin Accumulation?
Lipofuscin formation involves the peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, cross-linking of proteins, and polysaccharide components. This process is exacerbated by mitochondrial dysfunction and inefficient degradation by lysosomes. Toxic substances, such as heavy metals and certain drugs, can exacerbate these processes, leading to accelerated lipofuscin accumulation.
