irAEs are primarily triggered by checkpoint inhibitors, which are drugs designed to unleash the immune system against cancer cells. These drugs block inhibitory pathways that usually prevent immune overactivation. However, in doing so, they can also disrupt the immune systemâs balance, leading to autoimmunity and damage to healthy tissues.
