A scintillation counter is an instrument that detects and measures ionizing radiation by using the light flashes (scintillations) produced in a scintillator material. These flashes occur when the material absorbs a radioactive particle, and the emitted light is then converted into an electrical signal which can be measured. This device is particularly useful in toxicology for detecting low levels of radiation in a variety of samples, from environmental to biological.
