CO binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells more effectively than oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin. This prevents hemoglobin from delivering oxygen to tissues and organs, leading to hypoxia (oxygen deprivation). Symptoms of CO poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. Severe exposure can result in loss of consciousness, long-term neurological damage, or death.
