While macrocyclic GBAs are considered safe and effective, alternative imaging techniques such as ultrasound and non-contrast MRI are sometimes used to eliminate the need for gadolinium-based agents altogether. Moreover, research is ongoing to develop alternative contrast agents with even lower toxicity and environmental impact.
