Methanol is toxic primarily because of its metabolites. When ingested, methanol is metabolized in the liver by alcohol dehydrogenase to formaldehyde, which is then further metabolized to formic acid. Both formaldehyde and formic acid are highly toxic, affecting the central nervous system and potentially leading to severe metabolic acidosis.
