cftr modulators

What are CFTR Modulators?

CFTR modulators are a class of drugs designed to correct the malfunctioning CFTR protein, a chloride channel affected in cystic fibrosis. The three main types of CFTR modulators include potentiators, correctors, and amplifiers. Potentiators, such as ivacaftor, enhance the function of the CFTR protein at the cell surface, while correctors, like lumacaftor and tezacaftor, aid in the proper folding and trafficking of the protein to the cell surface. Amplifiers, although not yet widely available, aim to increase the amount of CFTR protein produced.
