There have been several successful applications of phytoremediation worldwide:
Chernobyl: Sunflowers were used to remove radioactive isotopes from water bodies around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site. New Jersey: Poplar trees were planted to degrade trichloroethylene from contaminated groundwater at a former industrial site. India: Vetiver grass has been used to stabilize and remediate lead and arsenic-contaminated soils.
