Several factors can induce mutations in mtDNA. These include exposure to environmental toxins, such as heavy metals and organic pollutants, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage DNA. Additionally, certain pharmaceutical drugs and lifestyle factors like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute to mitochondrial mutations. Importantly, because mitochondria have limited DNA repair mechanisms compared to nuclear DNA, they are particularly susceptible to damage.
