Kuru is a rare, progressive neurological disorder that belongs to a class of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases. It was first discovered among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea in the 1950s. The term "kuru" means "to shiver" or "trembling in fear," reflecting the symptoms observed in affected individuals.
