pneumolysin
What is Pneumolysin?
Pneumolysin is a
cytolytic protein
produced by
Streptococcus pneumoniae
. It is a member of the
cholesterol-dependent cytolysin (CDC)
family. Pneumolysin has the ability to bind to cholesterol in host cell membranes, forming
pores
that lead to cell lysis and death. This destruction of host cells is a key factor in the
pathogenesis
of bacterial infections.
