While the EPA establishes national standards, the responsibility for enforcing these standards often falls to individual states. States can implement their own drinking water programs, provided they are at least as stringent as the federal standards. They monitor water quality, conduct inspections, and ensure that public water systems comply with the regulations set forth in the SDWA.
