Cellular swelling is a potentially reversible condition if the inciting cause is promptly removed or mitigated. Reversal can occur if cellular homeostasis is restored before irreversible damage ensues. For instance, discontinuing exposure to a toxicant or administering an antidote can allow cells to recover their normal volume and function. However, if the stress persists, the cell may progress to irreversible injury and ultimately cell death.
