Cellular swelling is an early manifestation of almost all forms of injury to cells, characterized by an abnormal increase in cell volume. This condition, also known as hydropic degeneration or vacuolar degeneration, often results from the failure of cellular ion pumps, particularly the Na+/K+ ATPase pump, leading to an influx of sodium and water into the cell.
