The primary treatment for NAPQI toxicity is the administration of N-acetylcysteine (NAC). NAC acts as a precursor to glutathione, helping to replenish its levels and enhance the detoxification of NAPQI. It is most effective when administered within 8-10 hours of acetaminophen ingestion. In cases of severe liver damage, liver transplantation may be necessary.
