Bile acid sequestrants function by binding to bile acids in the intestine, forming an insoluble complex that is excreted in the feces. This process reduces the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids, forcing the liver to use cholesterol to synthesize more bile acids. Consequently, this decreases the cholesterol content in the liver and lowers serum LDL cholesterol levels.
