Osmolality is a measure of the number of solute particles per kilogram of solvent, usually expressed in osmoles per kilogram (Osm/kg) of water. It assesses the concentration of solutes such as electrolytes, glucose, and urea in the blood, urine, or other bodily fluids. In toxicology, osmolality is particularly useful in identifying an osmolal gap, which can indicate the presence of unmeasured osmoles, often due to toxic substances.
